The boy was stranded in rapid flowing water in the Yarra River.

Date: April 18, 2011
Time: 15;46 hours
Call Number: 8301

Address:  Yarra River, Lower Templestowe

Whilst canoeing with a friend of similar age, the canoe capsized near Finns Reserve.  One boy managed to swim to the side of the bank whilst the other was unable but managed to grab a tree branch and hang on despite the strong currents.  Fortunately both boys were wearing life jackets.

Following a request from the police and ambulance who where on scene, the MFB Templestowe firefighters and MFB Nunawading Rescue crews were called out. The boy was approximately 15-20 metres from the bank.  Strategically firefighters threw rescue ropes into the water until the boy was able to attach himself and he was pulled to safety by the crew. A cold and distressed boy was then tended to by the ambulance and police collected his friend from the other side.
