An eighty five year old man and his one hundred and five year old mother suffered minor smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital for observation following a house fire in Footscay last night.

An alert neighbour entered the house from the front and led the old lady to safety just before firefighters arrived on scene.

The cause of the fire will be investigated but it is believed the man was cooking at the rear of the premises at the time.

Quick work by MFB firefighters stopped the blaze from spreading to an adjacent property.

Local council inspectors will check for structural damage.
