Fire almost totally gutted a Niddrie gift and variety store on Monday.

Date: December 5, 2011
Time: 17:27 hours
Call Number: 2293

Address: Keilor Road, Niddrie.

The blaze at “Supa Bargains” discount gift and variety store in Keilor Road was first noticed just as the owner was about to close the shop at 5:30 pm.  There was only one customer in the store at the time and both the customer and owner escaped without injury.

MFB crews worked quickly to stop the blaze spreading to an adjoining Post Office and butcher’s shop.  The fire was deemed under control after 50 minutes but took a further 4 hours to fully extinguish.  Additional crews will maintain a fire watching duty overnight to dampen any remaining hot-spots.

The damage bill has been estimated at $750,000 and the cause will be investigated in the morning after the structural integrity has been checked by a council building inspector.
