A high rise residential building was evacuated last night due to a strong smell of gas.

Fire crews were called to the building on Point Park Crescent in Docklands at 7.17pm.

Approximately 80 people were evacuated as a precaution while firefighters searched the building for the source of the smell using gas detection equipment.

The source was not found but after shutting off the gas supply and ventilating the building it was deemed safe for the residents to return.  All residents had returned by 9.30pm.

Police attended and assisted with the evacuation.  There were no reports of any injuries.

The source of the leak will be investigated this morning.
