Police are investigating a suspicious fire in Altona North early this morning.

Several calls were received just after 3am this morning for a unit fire in Box Court, Altona North with the first caller saying “all the windows have blown out”.

The first crews to arrive on scene noted the two-storey dwelling was well alight with flames shooting out through every window and threatening adjoining units.

Reports that a baby may be trapped inside were relayed to the MFB crews and an internal search was conducted as soon as practicable.

The search fortunately showed that there was no-one inside and it was later discovered that the occupants were away for the night.

Damage to the unit was extensive with every room burnt out.

It was only due to its concrete construction that it was able to maintain its structural integrity.

The repair bill has been estimated at $150,000 and the cause has been deemed suspicious.

The fire took 20 minutes to bring under control.
