Firefighters were called to an apartment building on Homer Street in Moonee Ponds this afternoon after a resident saw smoke issuing from under a door.

The initial crews arrived on scene shortly after 2:30pm and began investigating the first floor wearing breathing apparatus.
They directed neighbouring occupants to shelter in place where it was safe while they worked to extinguish the fire in a first floor apartment.

MFB quickly responded additional resources to the scene, and Firefighters commenced a precautionary evacuation of residents from floors above where the fire started.

The fire was brought under control swiftly just after 3:15pm, with more than 30 firefighters working together at the scene to rid the building of smoke to make it safe for occupants.

Two people were treated at the scene by Ambulance Victoria for suspected smoke inhalation.

At the height of the fire there were seven fire fighting appliances on scene in addition to three other units.
