A fire that broke out at an Ascot Vale home overnight has suffered less damage thanks to a resident's quick actions to help contain the blaze.

MFB firefighters were called to the single storey property on Mirams St at 2:22am after reports of a fire in the rear area of the home.

The family was able to escape the burning property and one person was using a garden hose to extinguish the fire when crews arrived.

Firefighters immediately took over and their hard work ensured the blaze was brought under control in 20 minutes.

There were no injuries reported.

Victoria Police also assisted at the scene.
