A blaze which began in a BBQ and quickly spread underneath a home in Huntingdale has been brought under control by firefighters this evening.

Crews made their way to a weatherboard house Garnett Street shortly after 8pm this evening after a neighbour made a call to Triple Zero (000).

Initial crews arrived at the scene to find a solid fuel BBQ had caught fire which had aggressively spread underneath the home’s barge boards.

Crews used a chainsaw to remove floorboards and gain access to the fire. Their quick action ensured the fire was brought under control before it spread to the rest of the home.

Two residents were assessed by Ambulance Victoria paramedics at the scene for minor smoke inhalation, but did not require treatment.

Unfortunately the property sustained significant damage to bearings and floorboards of three bedrooms.

At the peak of the blaze there were six appliances and approximately 22 firefighters in attendance.

There reportedly was an issue with the initial emergency call as the address of the property was not able to be given to phone operators before a disconnection. Thankfully Triple Zero operators were able to make contact with the original caller and ascertain the address of the incident quickly so that emergency services could respond.
