Balwyn home damaged by fire

A single storey timber house was extensively damaged at the rear by fire this morning.

Several calls from the public were received and firefighters arrived to find the house on Weir Street in Balwyn well alight.

The presence of asbestos was suspected and protective procedures were put in place.

Crews arrived on scene at 2.48am and the fire was declared under control at 3.19am.

The house was unoccupied at the time and there were no reports of any injuries.

The damage is estimated to be in excess of $100,000.

The cause of the fire will be investigated in daylight hours.

Nine appliances and 28 firefighters attended the incident.
