22 Aug 2014
An elderly Bentleigh woman required hospital treatment following a house fire early this morning.

Fire crews arrived at the Mitchell Street home about 2.30am to find the house well alight with flames issuing through the roof.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus conducted a search and evacuated the woman from the house and placed her into the care of ambulance officers.

Due to the danger of roof collapse, crews withdrew from the house once the search was conducted and continued to attack the fire from the outside.

It took approximately 40 minutes to deem the fire under control.

Damage to the house is significant but the cost has not yet been estimated.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by MFB's Fire Investigation Unit and Victoria Police.
