A single storey weatherboard house was destroyed in an early morning blaze in Albion on New Year's Day.

The Ridley St fire was reported just after 5:30 with the first of several MFB crews arriving at the scene less than five minutes later.  The fire was so fierce that an entire block of units to the west had to be evacuated as more than 10 unit windows were broken by the intense heat.

A two storey house on the east side was also evacuated but did not sustain any fire damage.  Due to number of evacuations and the amount of smoke given off by the fire, Community Warnings were issued to the media and posted on the MFB’s website.

The fire was brought under control in 25 minutes but took more than two hours to extinguish.  Once the fire was sufficiently knocked down, a thorough search was conducted and confirmed that there were no occupants in the house.

The damage bill has been estimated at $300,000 and the cause listed as suspicious.
