Bonza barbecue and safety tips for a ripper long weekend

There’s no better day to eat the nation’s own coat of arms, nestled in a slice of white bread, covered in tomato sauce.

But before you turn up the Hottest 100 and throw a few kanga bangers or veggie patties on the barbie, make sure your barbecue is in fair dinkum order.

“While barbecues are meant to bring people together, our fireys would rather not join your party to put out a fire that could have been prevented,” MFB Acting Chief Officer Paul Stacchino said.

“Before you get the meat and salads out of the fridge, take a few minutes to see if the gas cylinder has any signs of damage. Then check if the hose line has any leaks by dousing it in soapy water and looking to see if bubbles appear. If they do, you’ll know that gas is escaping and it’s time to call a licensed gasfitter.”

But it’s not just barbecue safety that our fireys are worried about. CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington is also urging Victorians not to be a drongo when it comes to illegal fireworks or camp fires.

“Reckless behaviour or deliberately lit fires, such as not properly extinguishing a campfire, lighting a fire on a total fire ban day or using any equipment that may emit sparks and start a fire, can result in loss of life or property damage,” he said.

“Setting off illegal fireworks is also particularly dangerous and a person found to be in possession of fireworks and or using fireworks can be jailed for up to 15 years and fined thousands of dollars.

“Many local councils put on a free fireworks display, which is a much safer option for you and your family.”

And if you’re planning on chucking a sickie on Friday to make a long weekend of it, Energy Safe Victoria, is reminding campers not to use portable gas heaters in tents, caravans or cars.

ESV Director of Energy Safety Paul Fearon said carbon monoxide could kill in less than 30 minutes in an enclosed space.

“Don’t turn a sleeping bag into a body bag,” he said. “Never use portable gas appliances in enclosed spaces.”

BBQ safety tips:

  • Use your BBQ in a clear space. Using a BBQ indoors is illegal.
  • If a fire breaks out, turn the gas off at the meter or cylinder if safe to do so.
  • Check hose connections are tight and O rings aren’t split or cracked.
  • Exchange LPG cylinders at a reputable supplier.
  • Clean BBQs well as a build-up of oils and fats could spark a fire.
  • Avoid using BBQs in windy conditions as burners may blow out, causing a gas leak.
