Brighton house fire cause revealed

back to list
02 Mar 2017
MFB’s Fire Investigators have determined the cause of a fire which ripped through a Brighton house yesterday.

It’s been revealed a cigarette butt sparked the blaze which rendered the house inhabitable.

Fire Investigators believe the breeze from a split system fanned the flames, sending them up the wall cavity.

Firefighters were told that the house was recently sold.

The elderly occupant managed to escape and raise the alarm.

MFB is urging community members to ensure cigarette butts are disposed of appropriately to prevent similar incidents.

Ensure they are properly extinguished and when discarding, be aware of windy weather which may deposit smouldering butts where they can catch fire.

Keep balconies and other areas of the home free from objects and clutter.
