18 Apr 2012
A major gas leak occurred in Brunswick today which resulted in the evacuation of a shopping complex and surrounding buildings.

MFB Crews from Brunswick, Carlton and Northcote were quickly on scene. Firefighters sprayed water on the Natural Gas flow to dissipate the spread and minimise the risk from ignition sources.

The Gas Company representatives were able to shut down the valves stopping the flow of gas.

MFB crews using specialist monitoring equipment conducted testing of the atmospheric conditions continually to ensure there was no spread of flammable gas.

Police blocked local streets and assisted in evacuations of the centre and other areas.

It took over 50 mins to stem the leak and MFB crews were in attendance for over 3 ½ hrs. MFB Fire Investigation team will conduct an assessment of the cause of the leak.

No injuries have been reported.
