Firefighters have protected neighbouring shops after fire broke out at a popular Sydney Road cafe.

MFB firefighters were dispatched just after midnight after several calls were received for a shop fire emitting thick black smoke in the area.

All occupants of the two storey shop, Beirut Nights on Sydney Road, evacuated safely.

There was a building at risk beside the shop, MFB firefighters attacked the fire internally, managing to contain the fire to the upper level.

Asbestos procedures were instigated due to the age of the building.

Fire damage was contained to the front section of the upper level of the eight metre by 15 metre building. Damage is estimated at approximately $150,000.

The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes, and crews remained on scene for the night as a fire duty.

The fire is not thought to be suspicious and Fire Investigation attend to determine the cause.

Police were requested to assist with traffic control and Ambulance Victoria were asked to standby. Sydney Road was blocked in both directions for an hour.
