Flemington unit destroyed after candle sparks blaze

A candle that was knocked over ignited nearby curtains, sparking the fire that engulfed the Racecourse Road unit.

Crews were called to the unit fire located on the sixteenth floor of the apartment complex at 7:21pm after firefighters were alerted by the building's fire alarm system, as well as calls to Triple Zero (000).
 
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were aided by the buildings automatic sprinkler system and managed to contain the fire to the unit of origin.

The blaze was declared under control after 28 minutes.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were on scene assisting crews.

Fire safety tips:

  • Take care with candles, incense sticks and oil burners. Always make sure they are away from flammable items such as curtains and that they cannot be knocked over
  • Only use candles, incense and oil burners on stable, non-combustible surfaces
    Always extinguish open flames before leaving home or going to sleep
  • Ensure you have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home, including one in each room where someone sleeps with the door closed
