Candle to blame for St Kilda apartment blaze

A candle is being blamed for causing a fire that destroyed one unit and damaged three others.

The blaze in the single bedroom apartment in Dalgety St, St Kilda started just after 3pm on Wednesday 13 November.

The unit was located on the top level of a three storey apartment block.

The sole occupant, a male in his late 60s escaped uninjured. 

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control in 25 minutes and prevented the fire from causing extensive damage to the roof.

The repair bill has been estimated at $50,000.

Eight appliances and 30 firefighters attended the incident.
