Children were sent home early from a school holiday program at Caulfield Grammar Junior School this afternoon after a gas leak next door.

Fire crews were called to the Balaclava Road school in Caulfield North at 1.25pm.

Firefighters quickly discovered nearby contractors had cracked a pressured gas pipe.  The gas company arrived at the scene and worked to seal the rupture.

Some children were complaining of headaches. In total 47 children participating in a holiday program were evacuated.  Ambulance Victoria attended the scene as a precaution.

Eastbound traffic on Balaclava road was blocked. Trams were also affected.

Victoria Police were also on scene to manage traffic.

Two fire trucks and a Commander attended the incident.
