A China Town restaurant was significantly damaged by fire early this morning.

The first fire crews arrived at the Little Bourke Street restaurant at 12.20am. The restaurant was closed and it is believed that there was no one in the building at the time of the fire.

Crews focused their efforts to gain entry to the two-storey building and to prevent spread to other premises.

A Teleboom was used for overhead attack and a Ladder Platform was used as an observation platform.

There were reports received from the public for smoke from different parts of the CBD.

It is believed that the fire started on the ground floor and spread to the upper floor.

The damage bill has not yet been estimated.

The presence of asbestos was suspected and extra precautions were taken as a result.

The cause of the fire will be investigated in daylight hours by the MFB Fire Investigation Unit.

There were no reports of any injury.  Fire crews remain on scene this morning.
