Cigarette to blame for Keilor East garage fire

back to list
25 Jul 2015
Firefighters had to cut through a garage door to battle a fire at a Keilor East home on Saturday night.

Crews were called to the Buckley Street home at 8.30pm on Saturday 25 July after reports of a garage fire on the ground level of a two storey residence.

The garage was reported to contain stored furniture so had a heavy fire load and the residents were reported to be evacuating.  An extra firefighting appliance was despatched.

Immediately on arrival the fire was upgraded to a second alarm, by the officer on scene, so more appliances and firefighters were despatched.

All occupants were accounted.  Access to the garage proved difficult and the roller door had to be cut open with specialist cutting gear by the Rescue crews to gain access.

Crews aggressively attacked the fire and confined most of the damage to the double garage beneath the residence, however the house was heavily smoke logged.

It took 43 minutes for the fire to be deemed under control.  It appears that a discarded cigarette is the most probable cause of the fire.
