Clifton Hill home being renovated badly damaged by fire.

A Clifton Hill home undergoing renovations has been badly damaged by an early morning fire.

Crews were called to the single fronted, weatherboard dwelling in Abbott Grove at 5.30am. 

The building under renovation was not occupied at the time but a working smoke alarm was heard in the background.

The fire in the front portion of the dwelling has spread into the roof space.    

The fire took 30 minutes to bring under control and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Breathing apparatus was in use.

Crews will be on scene for some time the damage bill is estimated to be in the $100,000 range.

MFB Fire Investigators will attend later this morning.
