Collingwood family escapes injury following suspicious blaze

A family of four were evacuated after a neighbouring property caught fire early this morning.

Fire crews were called to Vere Street, Collingwood, at 2.44am.

The fire occurred in a vacant flat, which is one of a block of six.

A family of four in the flat below were evacuated without injury.

The fire was under control in less than 20 minutes.  The damage is estimated at approximately $100,000. 

There were no reported injuries.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and police are investigating.

Eight appliances and 23 firefighters were on scene.
