28 Jun 2014
A Hawthorn East home has been damaged by fire overnight

Crews were called to the Carnarvon Street home just before 2.30am.

The fire started underneath the fireplace in the lounge-room and then spread to the roof via an external flue.

A couple aged in their 30s were alerted to the fire either by the smoke or the sound of the fire just prior to their smoke alarm operating.  Both were able to evacuate safely.

Quick work by MFB crews managed to save most of the single-storey house and contained the blaze to the lounge-room and a section of the roof.

The fire took just under half an hour to bring under control and a council building engineer will be attending in the morning to check for any faults in the construction of the fire place and flue.

The damage bill has been estimated at $100,000.
