Almost 30 firefighters are working to control a house fire on Bluff Street in Hawthorn East.

Crews were called to the single storey brick home at 2:15pm following a number of Triple Zero (000) calls from passers-by.

The first appliance arrived on scene in just six minutes and was confronted with a thick plume of smoke issuing from the home.

Firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus are conducting an aggressive attack on the fire, which has spread between the ceiling and the flat deck roof.

Thankfully, one resident evacuated safely and there are no reports of injury.

There are seven appliances at the scene including one aerial teleboom, plus a Command unit.

There is a lot of smoke in the area and MFB is advising the community in Glen Iris and Hawthorn East to close their windows and doors.

Bluff Street is closed, and traffic in the area may be affected.

Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria Paramedics and utilities companies are at the scene.

It is not yet known what caused the fire at this stage.
