An abandoned restaurant has been destroyed in a suspicious fire.

Numerous calls were received for the blaze at the old Smorgy's Restaurant on Plenty Road, Bundoora, on Sunday afternoon at about 2.21pm.

On arrival, firefighters were confronted with a fire which totally involved an unoccupied one and two storey brick building 30 x 40m in an isolated area.

Fire fighting operations were hampered by limited water supplies in the area.

The premises have suffered significant fire damage and the structural integrity of the building has been compromised.

No one was injured in the fire.

Twelve MFB appliances, two CFA pumpers and almost 50 firefighters attended the fire, taking 90 minutes to control the blaze. Breathing apparatus was in operation.

The cause of the fire has been deemed to be of a suspicious nature and police are investigating.
