20 May 2019
MFB firefighters have stopped a fire which took hold of an office area attached to a factory on Crissane Road in Heidelberg just after 4am.

Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes and were met with a 20 x 10 metre office area fully alight and threatening to spread to the adjoining factory.

Crews wore breathing apparatus for protection as they conducted an internal search of the building to ensure no one was inside – thankfully there were no occupants.

Almost 30 firefighters were able to contain the fire quickly by attacking it from the inside.

Their quick work ensured the fire did not spread to the adjoining factory, and the fire was declared under control within 25 minutes of the first crew arriving.

The fire produced a lot of smoke and MFB has issued a community advice message for residents in the surrounding area.

At the height of the incident there were six firefighting appliances on scene, including an aerial unit, in addition to three other units as well as police and paramedics.

Emergency services are expected to be on scene for some time, and Crissane Avenue between Waterdale and Sheehan Roads will remain closed as firefighting operations continue.

At this early stage it is not known what caused the fire to start.
