Discarded cigarette causes chaos in Sunshine

back to list
22 Dec 2016
A discarded cigarette has been determined as the cause of a fire which wreaked havoc on a Sunshine home overnight.

A family of three was asleep when the blaze began about 4.30am but awoke to the sound of shattering glass.
Without working smoke alarms, they were lucky to escape with their lives.
MFB Fire Investigators investigated the cause of the blaze and determined it was sparked by a discarded cigarette butt.
Much of the family's home and contents were destroyed, including Christmas decorations and presents.
Firefighters are urging the community to take care when disposing of cigarettes to avoid similar incidents.
Here are some tips for keeping your family safe:
  • Keep cigarettes, lighters and matches out of reach of children.
  • Use heavy, high-sided ashtrays to prevent them tipping over and always properly extinguish cigarettes before discarding them.
  •  Always extinguish cigarettes, candles, incense and oil burners before leaving home or going to sleep.
  •  Never smoke in bed
  • Take extra care when disposing of cigarettes in windy conditions
