Early morning shop fire in Hawthorn East

MFB Firefighters battled an early morning blaze in Tooronga Road, Hawthorn East where a fire has consumed a shop complex.

Crews were alerted at 6:24am after a Triple Zero (000) caller sighted flames from a shop building. Crews were on scene in less than five minutes and were met with a structure fully alight and producing a significant amount of smoke. 

More than 25 firefighters used multiple appliances, including aerial appliances, to establish protective firefighting lines onto adjacent structures despite difficulties with access.

The fire was deemed under control in less than an hour. Crews are expected to be on scene for some time. 

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage and there are no reports of injury. 

Victoria Police is also in attendance.
