MFB firefighters have freed an elderly couple who were trapped following a car crash in Cheltenham this afternoon.

Crews from Highett and Oakleigh arrived on scene at Jackson Road about 5.15pm to find a car wedged between the fence of a house and a nature strip tree.

Following a delicate operation, fireys managed to extricate both the male driver and female passenger.

The duo has been transported by ambulance to The Alfred hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries.

MFB is working with Bayside City Council to assess the fence and tree to ensure they remain structurally sound.
