Elderly residents were evacuated from their apartments after a series of fires were set overnight.

An automatic fire alarm operated this morning alerting MFB firefighters of a fire within the three storey, elderly person’s residential block.

Crews were called to the scene in Port Melbourne shortly after 11pm last night.

The sprinkler systems within the premises activated and suppressed the first fire, assisting firefighters in total extinguishment.

MFB crews extinguished four fires within the common areas of the property.

16 elderly residents were evacuated from their rooms and placed into a comfortable common area. Most returned to their rooms several hours later and some were found alternative accommodation.

No injuries were reported, however, paramedics remained on scene to monitor the elderly.

MFB crews remained on scene until 3am to continue to extinguish and mop up excess water.

The police are investigating the cause of the fires.
