A family of four and their neighbour were evacuated after fire tore through their joined ceilings on Sunday afternoon.

Fire crews were called to the scene about 1.20pm.

An electrical fire in the bathroom ceiling of a Beech Street residence quickly travelled through the tiled roof space into the co-joined residence.

Approximately 80 per cent of the tiled roof space of both homes has been severely damaged.

MFB firefighters were quickly on scene and were able to stop the fire from spreading into the living areas of the residences; however significant smoke and water damage has occurred.

The resident of one property was alerted to the fire in his house by the family (two adults, two children) in the other residence that was co-joined.  All were evacuated before the arrival of fire crews.

Five people (including one police officer) were examined on scene by paramedics for minor smoke inhalation.
