Fire crews managed to prevent fire spreading to nearby boats on the Yarra after an early morning blaze.

A derelict boat, measuring 20 by eight metres, was fully involved in fire when MFB firefighters arrived just before 2.30am.

MFB appliances together with specialist marine firefighters quickly deployed MFB Fire Boats to the scene.

Whilst best efforts were made to extinguish the fire, it had already been destroyed.

Two other boats were threatened by fire and MFB firefighters were able to protect them from being damaged.

The remains of the derelict boat have sunk and the MFB have established pollution booms around the vessel.  The EPA and Melbourne City Council will be attending.

The fire has been deemed of a suspicious nature and police will investigate.

Eight appliances, including several MFB Fire Boats, attended the incident.
