Extensive damage to Box Hill restaurant after fat fire

12 Mar 2015
Fu Long Seafood Restaurant was extensively damaged by fire this morning.

Crews were called to the Maroondah Hwy restaurant about 7.30am.

First MFB firefighters on scene found the restaurant, within the older style two-storey brick building (30 by 15 metres), well alight and penetrating the roof.

Access for firefighting was difficult due to its location at the rear of the building, and further firefighting appliances were despatched to assist.

The firewall within the construction slowed down the spread of fire and combined with the professional efforts of MFB firefighters the fire did not penetrate the threatened adjoining properties (sustaining only smoke logging).

The fire took an hour 40 minutes to bring under control. MFB firefighters are still extinguishing the fire and will be remaining on duty for the remainder of the day.

No injuries have been reported.

Specialist MFB Fire Investigators have concluded investigations into the 200 seating capacity fire this morning.

The fire was caused by a build-up of fats in the kitchen flue above the canopy.

ATTENDING APPLIANCES: 15

NUMBER OF FIREFIGHTERS: Approx. 50
