Thick black smoke billowed from a house fire in Ardeer over the weekend.

Fire crews were called to the fire on Rockband Road in Ardeer on Sunday at 3.42pm.

Smoke was billowing out of the roof and side of the family home when first MFB firefighters arrived on scene.

Protected by hose lines, MFB firefighters forced entry into the burning property to confirm no-one was inside.

Asbestos was also present in the house and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus undertook procedures to protect all concerned.

A community warning was issued to warn nearby homes of the thick smoke issuing to the east of the property.

Fortunately no injuries occurred and the family were out at the time. Fire and smoke damage to the brick clad weatherboard home is extensive. The family will be seeking alternate accommodation.

MFB specialist Fire Investigators will determine the cause of the fire.
