Fifty residents evacuated after North Melbourne apartment fire

Fifty people were evacuated from a fire in a North Melbourne apartment complex overnight.

Crews were called to the Blackwood Street complex at 9.48pm after an installed alarm system triggered a response.

There was a lot of smoke present which required the evacuation of approximately 50 people for a short period of time. The fire was contained to a unit on level three.

Victoria Police members and Ambulance Victoria assisted with the evacuations.

The fire took 30 minutes to bring under control and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Breathing apparatus was in use.
