An alarm system alerted firefighters to a fire in a rehabilitation hospital in Doncaster East overnight.

The alarm was raised just before 2am and crews arrived at the address on Doncaster Road to find a fire in the ceiling space above one of the rooms.

A number of patients were evacuated as a precaution and rehoused in other parts of the facility, off site or returned to their homes.

The fire was under control within 20 minutes but crews remained on scene to assist with evacuations and removal of water.

Attending crews praised the efforts of staff who worked quickly to evacuate patients safely and calmly.
