Fire at Hofbrauhaus Restaurant.

back to list
29 Jun 2011
The fire was confined mainly to the compressed straw panels (generally referred to as “Stramit” which is Swedish for straw) located in the false ceiling of the restaurant.

Date: June 29, 2011
Time: 02:13 hours
Call Number: 9397

Address: Market Lane Melbourne.

The slow burning fire gave off large quantities of smoke making finding the source of the blaze even more difficult.

The only way crews could fully extinguish the fire was to remove all of the straw material and soak it thoroughly.  Both venues were closed at the time of the fire.

Damage to the Ding Dong Lounge bar was slight and consisted of a fixed glass window panel that was broken by firefighters to allow the removal of smoke.

The restaurant below suffered extensive damage to its ceiling through heat, smoke and water.  The damage bill has been estimated at $500,000.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious.

Attending Appliances:

Pumpers: 9

Number of firefighters: 30

Officer in charge: Commander Lou Mele
