Fire at Telstra exchange in Brunswick

Thirty firefighters have battled a fire at the Telstra Exchange in Brunswick this afternoon.

Firefighters responded to a fire in a Telstra telephone exchange on Frith Street at 3.35pm.

Crews could not enter the building until it was established that the power was disconnected.

Once it was established that it was safe for crews to enter they then proceeded to enter and extinguish the fire.

Crews are still onsite at this stage.

A community message was sent alerting the public to smoke in the area and to avoid the Firth Street area  

A cause has yet to be determined. Breathing apparatus is in use.
