Faulty extension lead to blame for Northcote blaze.

The fire involved a unit located on the first floor of a three storey apartment complex on High Street, Northcote, near Cunningham Street.

The fire burnt out the kitchen and lounge-room and spread smoke throughout the building necessitating a full evacuation of the premises.

At one stage, flames from one of the windows was impinging on the balcony of the unit above - raising fears that the fire could spread to apartments on the next level.

Police assisted in the orderly evacuation of the building with approximately 40 persons being moved to safety.

Fire crews were called to the scene about 9am and the fire took 50 minutes to bring under control.

It caused an estimated $250,000 worth of damage.

Fire investigators determined the cause was a fault in an electrical extension lead.
