A vacant house has been extensively damaged during a fire in Laverton last night.

MFB crews and other emergency services were called to the residential property on Bellin Street around 11.20pm.

The single-storey concrete house was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived, with the fire predominantly in the roof area.

A search of the property revealed it had been vacated and special asbestos procedures were also put in place by crews due to the age of the house.

The fire took just over half an hour to bring under control.

Most of the roof and interior was destroyed and an engineer will attend this morning to determine if the property needs to be demolished.

The fire is being treated as suspicious at this stage and will be investigated by police.
