Fire engulfs kitchen at South Yarra Indian Restaurant

An Indian restaurant in South Yarra has been severely damaged after a fire which started in the kitchen.

Crews were called to the Little India Bistro and Tandoor on Toorak Road at about 3pm on Wednesday March 13.

After receiving several calls for a fire in a three storey premises in Toorak Road, MFB firefighters arrived to find a fire in the ground floor restaurant.

A search was conducted of the building after reports of a missing staff member but all were found to be safe.

The fire originated in the kitchen area and is estimated to have caused almost $250,000 damage.

The building houses a gymnasium on the first floor and an office building on the second which were not damaged.

Eight appliances and 24 firefighters attended the incident. Breathing Apparatus was utilised.
