Fire in Johnston St Collingwood.

back to list
12 Jan 2011
A deliberately lit fire extensively damaged two unoccupied shops in Johnston St Collingwood this morning.

Date: January 12, 2011
Time:  01:57 hours
Call Number: 3779

Address: Johnston St, Collingwood.

The two adjacent shops have been vacant for several years and there is evidence they have been frequented by squatters.  There were early fears the fire would spread to buildings on both sides and additional crews were called in to ensure the blaze was contained before it could do so.

Prevailing weather conditions kept the smoke close to the ground causing people as far away as Flemington to report a strong smell of smoke in the air.

Though the fire was quickly brought under control, it took more than two hours to fully extinguish.  To ensure any hidden hot pockets did not rekindle the fire, an MFB crew will be remaining on scene until a thermal scan later this morning confirms there is no further threat.

Attending Appliances:
