Firefighters have battled a fire in Port Melbourne this evening.

Crews were called to the Turner Street factory just before 8pm after smoke began filling the lower level of the structure.

On arrival firefighters found a double storey tilt slab constructed factory, measuring 20 by 50 metres, that appeared to be smoke logged.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the premises to locate the fire and source of the smoke. The fire was located and extinguished however smoke has penetrated two other of the factory units contained within the structure.

Three occupants had self-evacuated and no injuries have been reported.

A Ladder Platform is being utilized to ensure the fire has not spread into the roof area of the structure.

The incident was under control in 10 minutes.

Fire investigators will attend in the morning to determine the cause.
