A South Yarra massage parlour was severely damaged by fire early this morning.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at Sacred Union of Mind Body Spirit on Toorak Road just before 5am.

A person who called 000 heard a loud explosion and then saw flames shooting from the two-storey brick building.

Firefighters contained the blaze to a top floor, a 14 square massage therapy suite.

The fire has originated in the laundry area before spreading into the kitchen and a section of the roof space.  That area of the premises has been severely damaged by fire.  The remainder of the suite has been damaged by heat, smoke and water.

There has been no fire or water damage to the floor below.

Police attended the scene to divert traffic and trams were stopped along Toorak Road for a short period of time.

The fire was deemed under control in 20 minutes and breathing apparatus was in operation.

The estimated damage is $75,000.
