MFB Firefighters are on scene at Molesworth Street, North Melbourne where a fire has consumed a second floor apartment.

Almost 30 firefighters are working to contain the fire, which is well established. There are currently nine fire appliances on scene.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus are attempting to access the second floor to extinguish the blaze, and to search for any occupants.

Initial crews were called shortly after 10am and arrived on scene just five minutes after they were dispatched. On arrival they were confronted with thick smoke and fire coming from the windows and balconies of the second floor.

Aerial firefighting appliances are working to establish positions, despite difficulties with access. The building’s occupants are being evacuated by crews on scene.

At this stage there are no reports of injury, and Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria paramedics are at the scene.

It is expected that crews will remain on scene for several hours. There is thick smoke in the vicinity and the community is advised to avoid the area and ensure the roads are kept clear for emergency service vehicles.
