More than 40 firefighters have responded to a fire at an apartment block on Dalgety Street, following several Triple Zero (000) calls reporting smoke just before 7:15pm.

MFB crews arrived within 6 minutes to the three storey brick building in St Kilda and found the top floor involved in the fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus conducted an internal search of the building to ensure no one was inside.

MFB crews commenced an internal and external attack on the fire, with MFB’s High Angle Rescue Technicians (HART) also providing support on scene.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, however investigations will commence once the fire is completely extinguished.

Crews are expected to remain on scene for some time as they work to extinguish remaining hot spots, and the public is advised to avoid the area where possible.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria are assisting MFB on scene. Emergency crews will be working to find accommodation for affected residents.

The fire was declared under control less than one hour after MFB crews arrived on scene.
