Two fast moving grassfires which erupted in Melbourne’s west have been contained, thanks to the quick efforts of firefighters.

Shortly before 8pm, crews were called to the first blaze, in grasslands on Fitzgerald Road, Sunshine West, following numerous calls to Triple Zero (000).

They arrived to find a blaze burning about 6 hectares in size, sending thick smoke wafting across the nearby Western Ring Road.

As firefighters were battling the first blaze, another fire was reported ten minutes later at nearby Federation Walk in Cairnlea.

The fire ripped through up to 15 hectares of grassland and initially threatened nearby buildings before engulfing a disused rotunda.

Working together, MFB and CFA firefighters managed to get the blaze under control in less than two hours.

The Sunshine West fire was also extinguished within 45 minutes.

Both fires are believed to be suspicious and have been referred to Victoria Police for investigation.

Firefighters are expected to remain on scene at Cairnlea for some time to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
