Firefighters were called to the former primary school on Browns Road in Clayton around 2:10pm this afternoon.

Additional appliances were requested due to the number of fires that have occurred at this location in a recent period.

Crews wearing Breathing Apparatus mounted an attack on the blaze and successfully contained the fire to a wing of the vacant school building, bringing the fire under control in 45 minutes.

MFB and CFA crews will remain on scene for some time.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and Victoria Police are on scene to investigate.
