MFB firefighters have freed a man from his car following a delicate two hour operation in Coburg this afternoon.

It's believed the driver was travelling along Bell Street when his truck hit a power pole about 3.30pm.

The force of the crash snapped the power pole in two, trapping the man inside the truck by his leg.

Firefighters from Preston, Thomastown, Pascoe Vale and Bundoora spent several hours working to free the man with the assistance of Ambulance Victoria paramedics and power company workers who remained on standby.

He was freed from the car about 5.30pm and has been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for a checkup.
