Firefighters have rescued a woman who was trapped under an Essendon house for four days.

Crews were called to the Wilson Street home just after 7pm last night after a relative of the homeowner heard scratching under the floorboards.

Upon investigation he found a woman trapped under the house who said she had been there for four days. The woman was not known to the occupant.

MFB crews were tasked with cutting through the joists and bearers of the subfloor of the kitchen area to access her.   Commander Roger Chitty has praised the MFB firefighters on a challenging and delicate task.  The extrication took almost an hour.

The female was treated by Ambulance Victoria and taken to hospital.

Police are investigating.
